Who We Use — Checkr

We partner exclusively with Checkr, one of the most trusted background screening companies in the United States. Checkr is used by leading organizations including Uber, Lyft, Instacart, and hundreds of nonprofits and faith-based institutions across the country — including many churches that use Checkr for their own volunteer screening programs.

We chose Checkr because of their industry-leading accuracy, fast turnaround times, and commitment to fair and compliant screening practices. Their technology is built to meet the highest legal and ethical standards, giving both our platform and our families confidence in every result.

Why Background Checks Matter

Shared faith is a powerful foundation — but it is not a substitute for verified safety. A background check gives parents an additional, objective layer of assurance that the person caring for their children has no disqualifying history. It also signals to sitters that everyone on this platform has been held to the same standard, creating a community built on mutual accountability.

What's Included in the Check

Every sitter background check through Checkr includes:

  • Identity Verification — confirms the sitter is who they say they are using SSN trace and address history
  • National Criminal Search — searches criminal records across all 50 states
  • Sex Offender Registry Search — checks against national and state sex offender databases
  • County Criminal Search — searches county-level court records for any additional history

The Process — Step by Step

Apply to Become a Sitter

Complete the multi-step sitter application on our Become a Sitter page, including your basic info, availability, church affiliation, and references.

Pay the One-Time Fee

During the final step of your application, you'll be prompted to pay the one-time background check fee of $75, processed securely through our payment partner.

Checkr Runs Your Screening

Checkr will send you an email to collect your consent and personal information. Most results are returned within 24–72 hours. You'll be notified when your check is complete.

Our Team Reviews Your Application

Once your background check clears, our team reviews your full application — including church verification and references — before approving your profile.

Your Profile Goes Live

Once approved, your verified sitter profile is published and families in your area can begin connecting with you.

Cost

The one-time background check fee is $75, paid by the sitter during the application process. This fee is non-refundable. It covers the full cost of the Checkr screening package described above. There are no recurring screening fees — once you're approved, your background check is valid for your active time on the platform.

A Note for Parents

Every sitter you see on Find Christian Sitters has passed a Checkr background check. You will see a verified badge on each sitter's profile confirming their screening status. While our vetting process is thorough, we also encourage parents to conduct their own meet and greet before a first booking. No background check replaces the value of a face-to-face conversation.
